What’s your favorite scary movie?”
Ghost face
So I have had the long awaited experience of seeing the latest addition to the Scream franchise in theaters recently. Scream VI, which did not feature Sidney Prescott for the first time, was quite enjoyable. I’ll admit it was a little weird seeing this franchise continue on without her, but I wouldn’t count her out yet.
I’m sure some people were not happy that Neve Campbell was not in this movie, but I like to think they’ll circle back to her down the road. What I liked is that they are getting creative with circling back to the beginning of the story. Unlike the other iconic horror franchises (i.e Nightmare of Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc.) Scream’s storyline keeps going deeper down the rabbit hole. No matter where you turn in these movies; the motive for becoming Ghostface spreads like a plague.
At the big revelation, in the climax of each movie the killer/killers are revealed and lay out their whole motivation for carrying out their bloody revenge. This really makes you keep guessing who is it going to be in the next chapter.
The new setting taking place in New York was a nice change. Keep the story moving and take it out of Woodsboro. Even if just for one movie, I’m good with that; however, if they keep going back to the beginning then it’ll have to end up where it all started. Hopefully, the writers will realize that. My opinion, of course.
I did enjoy Hayden Panettiere’s character, Kirby, making a few come back. You gotta love the horror geeks they have in the franchise that started with Jamie Kennedy’s character, Randy, who puts it all into perspective.
However, can we not have the “overconfident know-it all” niece of Randy spouting out horror movie knowledge and seeing her get it wrong time and time again?! I mean damn, she even admits she was wrong at the end of this movie. So just chill on that please.
I did miss Sheriff Dewey(David Arquette), in this sequel and it was sad to watch him die in the last one. But you gotta admit he went out heroically by sacrificing himself knowing he wasn’t going to win that final battle with Ghostface.
I also enjoyed Melissa Barrera’s character, Sam Carpenter, more than I thought originally. Like, it’s going to be tough to be the new “Sidney” so-to sp eak. But they’ve given the character quite a bit of depth with Billy Loomis being her biological father and has that natural psycho-killer instinct that she is constantly fighting.
You don’t choose your parents…sad but true in this case. ‘
I see this as opening all kinds of doors for plot twists and what could lead up to the ultimate showdown!
SIDNEY VS SAM!!
What an interesting turn of events that would be.
I’ve always thought the motives for each killer was pretty unique in their own way. Which leads me to believe that they will keep circling back to the original story with Sidney Prescott. WHY NOT MAKE HER THE KILLER?!
Think about it. Maybe after all these years of torture and witnessing her friends and loved ones brutally killed; she has a mental breakdown and decides to take matters into her own hands.
Sam slowly goes psychotic with her dad living inside her mind. Which we saw the climatic showdown in Scream 6….SPOILER ALERT. She takes down the Ghostface killers with a little motivation from her dead dad.
That would be fun to watch! Sidney and Sam have both lost their marbles and it’s a death match as to who still stands as the true psychotic maniac.
How about our girl, Gale Weathers? Next to Dewey; I love the character that adds a no-holds barred approach to bitchiness. Yet, she has a vulnerable side, as well. Her brash personality adds a much needed comic relief to the premise. While Ghostface does want her head on a stick, she doesn’t make it easy on him or them while throwing high levels of sass and smart ass remarks during I their little “talks.”
Honestly, I’m loving the new direction the franchise is going while maintaining the original slasher mystique. As a Wes Craven fan, I hope they keep it going in honor of him and for the fans in general.
Til next time, What’s your favorite scary movie??
